Women of India, Paintings
I’m a reserved photographer. These days photos are all taken on my phone. Back in the day, I loved my old Canon AE1. We upgraded to a digital to the Rebel XT but never had a magical telephoto lens that lets you capture portraits from afar. As a result, I have a lot of photos of people walking away from me.
The stenciled backgrounds and figures came together when I was messing around in the studio. Tiles, pattern, color are a source of inspiration and I frequently photograph them when traveling. My collection of stencils is growing but I have my favorites.
The Salwar Kameez is the traditional dress of the women of Punjab. Consisting of the loose fitting bottoms, the Salwar and a long tunic, the Kameez. Styles change seasonally and you would never wear a formal outfit twice! Formal wear is preferably tailor made so that no two are alike. The lady in red is sporting a Patiala style salwar, unique for its billowing layers of folds down the back of the leg.
Walking tall and walking proud in her school uniform. The negative space in front of the figure representing her future and all that lies ahead.
