Finding Inspiration with Silk Fabrics
I spent some time last month playing in the studio with my growing collection of silk fabrics. Bits and pieces of fabric purchased, found, gifted and handed down to me because maybe I could do something with them. Some have been with me for over 30 years, waiting patiently in a trunk. Memories of travels to India or just the Punjabi Market in Vancouver, back in the 80’s and 90’s, when it was thriving on those few blocks at Main and 49th.
A small piece is enough to bring me happiness. Some are sentimental, old garments of my moms, out of fashion, out of style but still so lovely to look at and touch. They’ll appear, bits collaged occasionally if I am working on something more intuitive.
I really enjoyed my 100 day project (although it took me a year to finish!) I thought I’d set some new goals, 30 days of abstract images. no restrictions on media, just 8”x8” paper size. 3 days into the project, all paints, and mark making tools got pushed aside. Scissors, silks, and mat medium are whats left.
Having fun in the studio, being inspired by the smallest bits of fabric, silk threads creating lines as they fall on the paper, raw frayed edges…
I’ll have a selection up in the shop soon. I’m currently working towards a June 1st deadline.!!!! Back to my stomping grounds on Granville island, Solo show time in Vancouver at New Leaf Editions, June 1- 23, with a reception on June 17th, 6-9.
